Every Wednesday morning over several cups of coffee and with guitars in hand, Thomas Hayden, of the acclaimed The Thick Crust Doughboys, and Scott Harvester started writing songs with the goal of exploring 1960’s instrumental blues. Influenced by Lonnie Mack, The Ventures, and British Blues, their collaboration birthed Lonesome Scott and the Generic Blues Band’s debut instrumental album Hop on Board the Blues Train.
To capture an authentic vintage vibe, the duo limited their gear and mixing choices to what was available in the early 1960s. However, a few modern twists naturally slipped through. "I was wondering what a '60s blues band might sound like playing lo-fi," Scott explains. "The result was You Put a Hex on Me, which is a lush, psychedelic sonic adventure."
The album is a dynamic journey through the genre's rich history. It opens with the locomotive guitar work of Gravy Train before chugging through the jazzy textures of It’s 5 O’Clock Somewhere Else and the electric country-blues of Strychnine Blues. Orbit Room transports listeners straight to a smoky, Rat Pack-era Las Vegas cocktail lounge, while One More Round injects a dose of gritty Texas blues into the mix.
